A MOTHERWELL man has been named captain of the Great Britain cerebral palsy football team at the Paralympics in Beijing.
Jonathan Paterson (20) of Staig Wynd, plays for the Scotland cerebral palsy team and went with them to the World Cup in Brazil last year. He is also a member of Dalziel High FP under-21 side.
The GB squad get together on August 7 and fly out to
China on August 23 for the Paralympics which take place from September 6 to 17.
Cerebral palsy football is seven-a-side and Jonathan is one of four Scots in the squad.
He was first given the captaincy when Britain played Ukraine in Birmingham two months ago.
The midfielder said: "I knew I was in contention to be in the final squad but there are few older boys from England who I thought might have got the captaincy, so I'm really pleased to have kept it.
"I've been captain of teams right back to boys' club level so I guess I must have natural leadership on the pitch which the coaches recognised."
Only four of the eight teams involved are professional – Brazil, Ukraine, Russia and Iran – but while Jonathan isn't expecting a medal he is demanding a decent showing from his side.
He said: "The medals will probably be shared among the four professional teams, but when Scotland finished sixth at the World Cup we lost to Brazil by just one goal so there is the possibility of getting a win or draw against them.
"We have a very strong squad and hopefully will finish fourth or fifth."
Jonathan has just completed an HND in sports coaching and development.
He works at Kwik Fit Insurance in Tannochside whom he wishes to thank for arranging his shifts to allow him to compete.
