MEMBERS of the public will have their say on the ongoing changes to the transport network in Bellshill town centre at a special public meeting in Bellshill Cultural Centre on Monday, September 8.
The meeting has been set up by councillors on North Lanarkshire Council's Bellshill & District area committee.
Since the new system came into operation there have been lengthy delays caused by a bottleneck at the junction of Motherwell Road and Main Street, where traffic coming down Motherwell Road to go to Bellshill Cross merges with vehicles coming along Main Street from the Mossend direction.
Area committee convener Comuncillor Richard Lyle said: "The purpose of the meeting will be to consider the traffic mangement system in the town centre and to discuss whether modifications should be made before the final upgrade to put parking bays in Bellshill Main Street is implemented.
"We want members of the public, traders, taxi owners and any other interested parties to come along and express their opinions.
"There has already been some adverse reaction to the system and a number of traders have reported a serious downturn in their income."
Some traders have already met with local MSP Michael McMahon to discuss their concerns, after which he called for more help to be given to them to compensate for lost business.
Mr McMahon said: "I am prepared to give the planners some time to come up with alternatives but the situation is a shambles."
Council traffic and transportation team leader Tom Peebles said: "I look forward to hearing the views of those attending and hope it is a very productive meeting."
The meeting will start at 2pm.
