CHILDREN from a church in Bellshill have proved they are up for a challenge — by designing, planning and creating their very own memorial garden.
Members of the Sunday School and Bible class at EU Congregational Church undertook the project as part of the North Lanarkshire Challenge.
And all their hard work came to fruition when the church held a special dedication service to mark the off
icial opening.
The EU children were the first Sunday School and Bible class to take part in the challenge, an initiative run by North Lanarkshire Council and designed for children between the ages of eight and 14 who are not yet old enough to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
As well as designing, planning and making the memorial garden, which was part of their skills section of the award, the children have also had to complete eight hours of physical activities and an Adventure Walk.
After completing all three sections, the children received certificates at their annual prizegiving service.
The garden was formally opened by Miss Sadie Kelly, one of the church's older members, who provided great support to the youngsters and has been a Sunday School leader for many years. Challenge co-ordinator Eddie Smith congratulated the children.
The children who undertook the project were Callum Bulloch, Dale Bulloch, Ellie Birch, Chelsea Murray, Craig Mercer, Gail White, Hazel White, Hannah Felth and Aaron Felth. They were helped by Bible class leader Elizabeth Riddell and Sunday School leaders Carol Murray and Elaine Gatenby.
