BELLSHILL chef Andrea Dowie took silver in the Charlton House Ready, Steady, Cook Challenge at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Sixteen chefs from Charlton House staff restaurants throughout the Midlands, the North and Scotland were given a box of mystery ingredients and had to cook a three-course meal in just 30 minutes in front of a live audience.

Four teams of finalists then had 45 minutes to cook another three-course meal.

Andrea, who works as a chef de partie at Laing O'Rourke in Motherwell teamed up with sous chef, Anthony Coltman from Kirsdall in Leeds.

The talented pair made sea bream with wild asparagus and crushed cherry tomatoes for starters, followed by a fillet of venison with roasted truffle potatoes, artichoke and a pomegranate jus. For dessert, they made summer berries with shortbread.

Andrea said: "It was a highly enjoyable experience and a great showcase for Charlton House skills.

"The competition was tough and we were tight for time but we made it!"
