NEW Lanarkshire folk rock band Gallus are hard at work on a debut album and organising a tour of America.
Band members Graham Watson (drummer) from Motherwell, Mark McCullagh (bassist) and Johnnie Walker (guitar) are from Wishaw and Aidan Broadbridge (violin, keyboard, mandolin) from Lanark had previously worked musically with each other over the years before deciding to form their own group in February.
Graham said: "After three rehearsals we knew we were on to something and set about arranging our first gig, I think its quite unheard of to arrange a gig after such a short period of time.
"We played Motherwell United Services in front of friends and family and after receiving rave reviews we also received two bookings for both Lanimer Day and the Carnwath Red Hose Day. We've also played a charity gig in Colinton, Edinburgh and at Images in Lanark.
"Ours is, we believe, a unique approach to folk/rock music. There's a mix of traditional folk melodies played on the electric violin, electric guitar and/or electric bass backed by superb percussion and the music we create is very different and some have said, quite breathtaking.
"We have transformed some classic tunes and given them a new, modern, lease of life, fusing folk with jazz, with blues with rock."
Despite outside commitments, Graham (35) is an insurance consultant, Mark (28) works for Scottish Water, Johnnie (57) is a tax clerk and Aidan (33) is a music teacher, each have been immersed in music, performing individually at all sorts of events from the orchestra pit at the Edinburgh Playhouse to BBC film Cranford and motion pictures Becoming Jane and Pride and Prejudice.
Graham continued: "Our performances are a far cry from some of the traditional music performed in those feature films but this simply shows the adaptability and talent the band possess.
"Admittedly, we started up the band as a "wedding" band but I'm not sure we can limit our exposure to weddings now. We want to play weddings, ceilidhs, functions and festivals in fact, the more people there to hear us the better."
Gallus have just completed recording a demo CD, the tracks have been laid down and Aidan and Mark are "producing" the finished product.
Graham said: "It's a time consuming process but we're all really happy with what we've heard so far. We're planning on recording a debut album in November and we're currently working on material for that.
"We potentially have the opportunity to do a small tour in the States next summer. This is very exciting for us but the plans are still very much in their infancy just now."
